Ques. What is Fire Door?
Ans. A fire door is a door with a fire-resistance rating (sometimes referred to as a fire protection rating for closures) used as part of a passive fire protection system to reduce the spread of fire and smoke between separate compartments of a structure and to enable safe egress from a building or structure or ship.
Fire doors play an important role in saving lives and building regulations specify where they need to be fitted in residential and commercial property settings.
Buildings are compartmentalized to delay the spread of fire from one area to another. These compartments are usually linked by fire doors to allow the flow of traffic around the building. Fire doors have two important functions in a fire; when closed they form a barrier to stop the spread of fire and when opened they provide a means of escape.
A well designed timber fire door will delay the spread of fire and smoke without causing too much hindrance to the movement of people and goods.
Every fire door is therefore required to act as a barrier to the passage of smoke and/or fire to varying degrees depending upon its location in a building and the fire hazards associated with that building.
Ques. When are fire doors required?
Ans. Basically wherever a fire might start, it is advisable to use a fire door. For example, doors leading from: a kitchen; a lounge with a fireplace & TV; or any room with electrical equipment or flammable items.
Building regulations for domestic properties stipulate when fire doors should be used and the key areas are:
Local councils issue planning permission and are responsible for policing building regulations through Building Control Officers. The architect who has specified the project is the best first point of call, regarding fire door requirements and regulations. Commercial property regulations are substantially different and it’s rare that a commercial building does not have some fire doors.
Ques. How fire doors work?
Ans. A fire door must be fitted with approved intumescent strips which play a crucial part in achieving the fire door rating. When subjected to heat, the intumescent strips expand and seal the gap between the door edge and the frame. Intumescent seals can be fitted within the door frame or grooved into the door edge. Advice on the intumescent strips can be obtained from the test evidence report, which we can provide.
The material from which the door frame is constructed (e.g. softwood, hardwood or MDF), as well as its section sizes must comply with the required standards. Furthermore, essential hardware (ironmongery) must also have its’ own individual test evidence to show fitness for purpose.
Ques. How is fire exit hardware different from panic hardware?
Ans. When panic hardware is used on fire doors, it must be fire exit hardware, which bears labels for both panic and fire resistance. A door with fire exit hardware will also have an additional label, indicating it is equipped with fire exit hardware. Fire exit hardware does not incorporate a mechanical dogging feature—the means to hold the latch retracted using a key, thumb turn, or Allen wrench. For fire doors where a ‘push/pull’ condition is desired, fire exit hardware with electric latch retraction may be used, as long as the latch projects automatically upon fire alarm, to secure the door.
Some vertical rod fire exit hardware for pairs of doors can be installed ‘less bottom rod’ (LBR). These devices use the top rod and latch only, with no bottom rod or latch. The advantage is there is no floor-mounted strike, and no bottom rod or latch to become damaged by carts or traffic. This configuration can sometimes cause a reduction in security, because it may be more easily defeated with only one latching point at the top of the door. In most cases, doors with LBR devices are required to have an auxiliary fire pin, which mounts in the edge of one door and projects into a hole in the edge of the other door if there is a fire.
Ques. Classification of Wooden Fire Door.

What is the difference between an FD30 & FD60 fire door?
FD30 offers 30 minute fire protection and is suitable for all domestic situations. FD30’s are available in 44mm thickness. FD60’s offer 60 minute fire protection, these are available in 54mm thickness and are suitable for higher risk premises and some high risk rooms such as boiler rooms.
Can I paint my fire door?

FD30’s are approximately 45kg and FD60’s are upwards of 75kg.
What is the largest fire door I can order?
The maximum size available is 2900mm x 2900mm.
what is a paint grade ply finish?

NOT subject to the full severity of a fire because of their location Fire Check OR Fire Retardant Door – Requires resistance to the passage of smoke AND also blocks fire by containing it and compartmentalizing it. It has to meet both the requirements of smoke and flame resistance. At present, fire doors are specified as smoke-stop doors when required to fulfill the first function and fire-check and fire-resisting doors to fulfill the first and the second.
